Matt Gaetz
Former U.S. Representative (R-FL) · 2017–2024
Matt Gaetz was one of Trump's most aggressive and loyal defenders in the House of Representatives. He appeared on Fox News constantly, wore his MAGA credentials loudly, and made himself useful by attacking Trump's enemies with the kind of theatrical aggression the former president enjoys in surrogates. He parlayed this loyalty into influence — and eventually weaponized it.
In October 2023, Gaetz orchestrated the removal of Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker — an unprecedented act that left the House without a Speaker for weeks and exposed Gaetz's willingness to burn everything down to get what he wanted. The stunt elevated his profile. He expected a reward.
He got one — sort of. Trump nominated him to be Attorney General. Gaetz resigned from Congress to take the nomination, leaving his seat before confirmation was guaranteed. Senate Republicans made clear they would not confirm him, citing a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of sex trafficking, illicit drug use, and financial misconduct. Trump withdrew the nomination. Gaetz had resigned his House seat — the only job he had. He left Washington with nothing.
Gaetz serves in Congress as one of Trump's most performative loyalists. He appears regularly on Fox News attacking the FBI, the DOJ, Democratic officials, and anyone Trump designates as an enemy. He votes against Ukraine aid, against bipartisan legislation, and for every Trump position regardless of policy substance.
Gaetz files a motion to vacate the chair against House Speaker Kevin McCarthy — the first time in U.S. history a Speaker has been removed by his own party. The House is leaderless for three weeks. Gaetz describes it as a principled stand. Most members of his own caucus describe it as chaos for its own sake.
Trump nominates Gaetz as Attorney General. Gaetz resigns from Congress before his confirmation is secured, presumably confident his loyalty would be rewarded. Senate Republicans immediately signal they lack the votes to confirm him, citing the pending House Ethics Committee report into allegations including sex trafficking of a minor, illicit drug use, and misuse of campaign funds.
Trump withdraws the Gaetz nomination. Gaetz has already resigned his House seat. He is no longer in Congress. He is not confirmed. He holds no government position. He returns to Florida with nothing. The Ethics Committee report is later released and details the allegations in full.
